Data Dumps

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Psalm 34:8

So many sermons these days are just data dumps. “Let me give you more information.” What is needed is not just more information. Satan knows more about God than any of us. But what good does it do him? What is needed is the experience of God which leads to heart-felt worship and a life of devotion. Preaching does need to set out some information from a text of Scripture, some truth about Jesus and His gospel. But then it needs to drive home that information to the consciences of the listeners so that that they will flee sin and unbelief, and instead pursue God in Christ by faith. Therein lies real life, the life of eternity that the gospel promises but so many Christians do not enjoy to the extent that they could. And what an effect on the world would such lives make for the sake of the Kingdom.

  1. I just listened to a sermon by Ben Merkle today that talked about seeing through covenant eyes. It really challenged some of my assumptions about how God relates to us.
