What does it mean to be a helper? In our culture, a helper is someone who assists the person with the primary abilities. There's the carpenter, and then there is his helper. Everyone knows that if the helper had sufficient abilities he wouldn't be a helper. He'd be the carpenter.
All of this, and more, affects us when we read in Genesis 2 that the woman who was brought to the man was to help him. And it is so easy to think that if she had sufficient abilities she wouldn't merely be his assistant. But she doesn't have those abilities. She's just some help.
But what do we do with the Scriptures that refer to God as our help?
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1–2
Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8
Why do we think of someone who helps as second rate, not quite capable? Can't we think of such a person as one who has strength, someone coming to a person who is in need of that strength? Couldn't Eve have been brought to Adam because he needed her strength?
