For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my
hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not
be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is
God. Psalms 62:5-7
Here is David. And
he is talking to himself. But why would he do that? Judging by what he tells
himself, he needs to reassure himself of some basic facts. The most important
of these has to do with who God is. He is a rock, salvation, a fortress.
Actually, that's not what David told himself. What David actually said was God
is 'my rock and my salvation, my
fortress'. This was no time for some generalized statements about the nature of
God. David needed to remind himself of what God is for him. It is because he could remind himself of these very
personal facts that he could then remind himself: 'I shall not be shaken'.
David knew who God
is. He is the covenant-keeping God of Israel,
the covenant-keeping God of David. It was because of this knowledge
about God that he could have great confidence in God as he faced some unstated
problem.
There are lots of
other things going on here. (Why waiting in silence?) But this is enough. That
is, it is enough if you take it to heart and imitate David in his knowing some
basics about God and thus being able to be thoroughly confident in him. So, how
are you doing at talking to yourself, at reminding yourself, like David did?
