In him we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. Ephesians
1.7
There are some
familiar words here: 'redemption' is about our rescue from the curse of death,
'blood' reminds us of the Cross and the hell that Jesus endured, 'forgiveness'
means that God doesn't hold our sins against us. And these things are ours
because we are 'in Him', united to Jesus. We are in the Jesus group.
But then there is
that phrase 'the riches of His grace'. It is not possible to grasp much about
God's grace, His being favorable toward us, without having a good grasp of the
offense, the insult, the blasphemy of our sin. As that develops, we come to understand
better the idea of 'the riches of His
grace'.
