Surely he has borne our griefs and carried
our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our
iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his
wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we
have turned - every one - to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the
iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53.4-6
I admit that this is
not the kind of Scripture passage that most people are thinking about during
Advent. But it is exactly the kind of Scripture passage that we actually need
to be thinking about now. We need to keep clearly in mind the reason for Jesus'
coming: the Cross.
We do not celebrate
the coming of a cute little baby. We celebrate the coming of a savior, our
Savior, who has dealt with our biggest problem, the sin that would keep us far
from the God who has created us.
