Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever
does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. John 3.36
This is one of those
verses where part of it is glorious. Imagine, eternal life. We now have the
life of God to enjoy. But there is the other part that isn't nearly so
pleasant: the wrath of God. Church folk these days shy away from talking about
or even thinking about God's anger. But why? It's an aspect of who He is, just
like His compassion and His love and His power. His wrath is a part of what
makes Him God. And to be sure, it is something that He exercises even now. The
eternal life that Christians enjoy is, in part, the absence of any of that
wrath. But reality for the rest of humanity is lived in the context of that
wrath. I suspect that it would be a good thing for Christians to spend a little
time considering the wrath of God. It will make the experience of eternal life
that much richer.
