Comment on a Psalm

 Psalm 54

This Psalm is about the time when David was running for his life from the jealous King Saul. Some people who knew where David was hiding told Saul. That made life difficult for David. If Saul found him it would mean his death.

So, David does what we all can do when faced with difficulties. He cries out to God. And what does he ask for? There are a few things. First, to be rescued. That is an obvious request. But also notice that he asks to be vindicated. David wants justice to clear his good name.

There is one more request worth noting.
in your faithfulness put an end to them. (5)
Now, this is interesting. David wants God to do to his enemies what they were plotting to do to him. And he wants God to do this as an aspect of His faithfulness to David. This is simply an application of something that shows up elsewhere in the Scriptures. Here's one example.

Behold, the wicked man conceives evil and is pregnant with mischief and gives birth to lies. He makes a pit, digging it out, and falls into the hole that he has made. His mischief returns upon his own head, and on his own skull his violence descends. (Psalm 7:14–16)
This is what will happen to the wicked. David is simply asking God to apply that in his life.
