And without faith it
is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe
that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6
If you take a look
at Hebrews 11, from which our verse is taken, you will see that it contains a
list of people who trusted their God. 'By faith Abel…'. 'By faith Abraham …'.
By faith Sarah …'. Knowing the context will help to explain what our author is getting
at in our verse.
The faith that he
extols is not a general profession that Jesus is my Savior and Lord. No, this
is about responding to whatever it is that is confronting you by trusting Jesus
as the Savior and Lord of that situation. It's about living all the details of
life by faith. That's what Sarah and the others were commended for.
There is also a
second point here. One reason that we are urged by our author to respond in
this way is that there will be a reward from God for all who do. There is
encouragement here for the faithful.
The question for you
to ask now is, 'How does this apply to my particular life situation? What does
it mean for me to live by faith in terms of the things that are confronting me
these days?'
