Psalm 52
According to its Hebrew heading, this Psalm is a response to Doeg, the Edomite, whose comments
to King Saul concerning David's whereabouts resulted in the murder of the
priests of Yahweh. (See 1 Samuel 22.)
David pulls no
punches. He describes this man in stark terms. David focuses on Doeg's words
which makes sense. It was by his words that he brought about the deaths of
those priests.
Then, David
anticipates what God will do to him. Again, David pulls no punches. And the
people of God will see what will happen and respond with their own condemning
words. How interesting that the people of God will laugh at him, that is, mock
him. Evidently, there actually is a time for us to mock others.
David closes with a
statement of thanks for God's sure, covenant love that will bring this justice
about. It is this love of God that David will trust in as he waits for the day
of justice - a helpful thought since there is, oftentimes, much waiting for justice.
