And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him."
John 12:23–26
Some things to note:
- What Jesus is saying applies to Him first. But it also applies to us.
- Notice how Jesus labels what is going to happen to Him: 'Glorified'. He is referring to the Cross. How you label something has great power in how you understand it.
- 'Dies' Jesus uses the quintessential curse word: death. Hopes and dreams and desires must die. And dying is never pleasant.
- 'Fruit' What is the fruit that Jesus refers to? I suspect that it has to do with good that affects one's own life as well as the lives of others. That is true of Him, and it is true of us.
- 'Honor' What could it mean to be honored by the Father? Try to imagine the Father honoring you. This will be true of all who serve Jesus.
