Lead me in the path of your commandments,
For I delight in it. Psalm 119:35
There are a few
words here that would be good to notice. (I hope that you've already noticed
them.)
Let's start with
'it'. This isn't a huge deal but since this is singular it can't be referring
to the commandments. It's referring to 'path'. So, what our friend is
delighting in is the path, the way of living, that the commandments chart out
for us. And that is a reminder that the point of this psalm isn't the laws,
commands, etc. It's what they are describing. They are describing a way of
life. And it's that way of life that our friend 'delights' in. And that, of
course, makes sense. After all, it's a way of life that actually works.
Understanding and obeying God's Law is about living wisely, something to
'delight' in. The last word to note is 'lead'. The psalmist is appealing to God
to guide him into this way of living. And that makes sense because left to our
own resources none of us is able to even understand, let alone live out, what
God has to say about living well. This is another appeal to God's grace instead
of depending on our works.
