I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget
your word. Psalms 119:16
The first part of
this is pretty clear. We all know what it means to delight in something.
However, we do need to consider why this person would delight in God's
statutes. It would be good for us to take the time to list some reasons why
that might be the case. That list could encourage us or even challenge us when
it comes to our delight in God's statutes.
The second part is a
bit more opaque. And that's because it seems to be a roundabout way to say that
he will remember God's word. This gets more interesting when you bear in mind
that there is more than mere recall when the Bible mentions remembering. Here
are a couple of examples.
But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided. Genesis 8:1
Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. Genesis 30:22
In both cases God
brings something to mind and then He acts appropriately. I think that our
psalmist friend is saying the same thing. He will bring God's word to mind in
the situation that he finds himself in and then act appropriately. This is one
way that he will show his delight in God's statutes.
