God never meant the
Christian life to be complicated, and he never deceives or confuses us. His
demands are actually rather straightforward, as the Preacher says at the end of
Ecclesiastes: “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His
commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed
into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil" (Eccles.
12.13-14). We are the ones who make the Christian life problematic and complex,
not God. The “secret” of the true spiritual life is always simple: will you
trust and obey God?
