And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we
have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace
and truth. John 1.14
Here are some words used in this Scripture
that a person could meditate on with profit:
- Word
- Flesh
- Dwelt
- Glory
- Grace
- Truth
I'm going to choose
'glory' and ask this question: what was the glory that John - and others - saw?
Contrary to old (and
beautiful) paintings of His birth, there was no halo hovering over Jesus' head.
And except for what happened on the Mount of Transfiguration, which only three
people saw, there was no glow or the like emanating from Jesus as He walked
from village to village. So, what was the glory that so many saw? Here's one
really good candidate: the wonder of seeing the holy God-incarnate serving
sinful men and women. And the best example of that is the Cross.
This serves as a
reminder for us as we live in a world that chases a kind of glory that is
nothing like this real glory. Counterfeits abound. Hold out for the real thing.
