Scripture to Meditate On

The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand. Psalms 37.23-24

This is another of God's great  promises. The assumption of the psalmist is that we will fall. Sin in its various forms, our own sin and the sin of others, will fool us, trip us up. But the promise is that we will not 'be cast headlong'. Sure, we will stumble, but we won't go crashing to the ground. And the reason why is clear. Our Father holds us by the hand. What a great picture!

There is a condition to this promise, as with all the promises. We are to 'delight in his way'. Following Jesus is to be our chief joy and that all the time. That of course, describes none of us. But that's okay. It's the goal for us to strive for. And the key to that striving is our prayers. That's when we tell our Father that we really want to delight in Him and in His ways, but we just aren't able to - unless He graciously acts to make that happen. In this way, little by little, we grow in our delight. And the Father, seeing our desire to delight in Him, though not the actual delighting, securely holds our hands.
