Father,
This week we
actually get time off from work so that we might give You thanks. And while,
for most of our neighbors and friends, this is just an excuse for a get
together and football, it's not that for us.
You have been so
good to us, Father. There are all the things that You have done that we are
quite aware of, blessings upon blessings. But then, there are all the things
that we don't think about, all the things that have faded into the background
or that we've never been aware of. More blessings.
And because we know
how You use evil for good, we even thank You for the hardships that You have
sent our way. Maybe in this life, but certainly in the next, we'll be able to
see that even these result in much good.
Father, we could
make quite a list of particular ways in which You have blessed us. But we will
mention only one.
We are grateful,
Father, that You decided to love us. There certainly was no reason for You to
do that. But You did. And it's because of that decision that You included us in
Your work of redemption. You've rescued us from our sin. Its penalty is satisfied.
Its power is broken. And any day now, its presence will be gone, too. And
instead of being sin's slaves we have become Your children. You are with us
every moment, to love us at every turn. And our forever is going to be
glorious. All because You decided to love us.
Father, we realize
that there is so much about Your love that we really don't get. But we do want
to express our thanks, at least to the extent that we understand. And it helps
to know that You accept our gratitude even though we are missing so much.
Help us, Father, to
see more and more clearly who You are and what You do so that our understanding
of Your love will grow and result in a greater response of gratitude by our
words and our lives. Through Christ our Lord Amen.
