A Prayer

Father,

When we pause from busyness of life, and take a moment to consider who You are, it overwhelms us. You are God. To say that is so familiar, but to ponder what it means is something more.

You are God. That means that you have no beginning. You have been from everlasting. What could it possibly mean not to have a beginning? We have no idea.

You are God. That means that You are pure spirit. You don't have a body. But that also means that You, this pure spirit, don't take up any space. You don’t exist in space. We can't even imagine what that could be like.

You are God. That means that You, the one God, are at the same time three, Father, Son, Spirit. How can one be three and still be one?

Then, there are the things that You do.

You have created all of this. And You created it out of nothing and into nothing. It's not just that there weren't any planets and stars and all that exists on them. There wasn't even any space. You made it all.

And You created all of this simply by saying some words. What power! What creativity! When it came to creating humanity, You made us like You. You made us in Your image. So, with all our limitations, there is still something about how You made us that makes us different from the rest of the creatures that You have made, even the angels. Why?

And once You made us and all of this, You didn't walk away. Though You had no need of us, You stooped down to interact with us. Our first parents must have had some fascinating conversations with You in the cool of the day.

And then, when we broke Your creation with our sin, You didn't decide to end it and maybe try again with some other creation with some other creatures. No, You decided to fix what was broken. And You didn't do that by just speaking. You came personally and at great cost to make sure that it would all get fixed. Father, what does it mean for You, God, to shout Your wrath at the Son who is the same God?

One day, all that is broken will be fixed. How long, O Lord? But when that finally does happen, we are going to be able to spend a lot of time getting to know You better and better, enjoying fascinating conversations with You in the cool of the day. And won't that be something. Thank You for that hope. It makes living through all of this worth it. Through Christ our Lord Amen.
