A Prayer

We thank You, Spirit of God, for Your presence with us. You act quietly in our lives and yet with great power and effect. It's Your presence that makes the difference and not just in our lives.

You were present at the beginning of creation, hovering over the face of the waters, fulfilling Your role in making all of this.

You were present with the prophets so that they could speak words of grace and truth.

You were present at the incarnation, conceiving our Savior in Mary's womb.

You were present at Pentecost to empower the Church for its new mission.

And You are present in us to make us more like Jesus.

You are the very powerful, very busy, very present God.

And yet, Spirit, we know You so little. There are some things that we clearly know about the Father. There are some things that we clearly know about Jesus. There are some things that we can clearly know about You - but we don't. And that's not good. It's because of this lack in us that we are unable to work with You as well as we might. So, we ask You, Spirit, to teach us more about who You are and what You do. Give us a greater awareness of Your presence in us and among us. Show us more of what makes You glorious. We ask this because there are tremendous needs all around us, needs within the Church and outside of it. So many things need to change.

But there will be no change apart from Your presence and Your power. If we don't really know You, don’t really understand what You do and how You do it, how can we work with You to bring about this change? So, teach us, Spirit of God. Reveal more of Yourself to us, so that we will be useful in changing the world and ushering in the kingdom. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
