My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching.
Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck. Proverbs 6.20-21
This bit of Scripture is obviously aimed at children. But it also has something to say to parents. Parents need to have something worthwhile to command and teach their children. Many parents command and teach, but not all of what they say should be listened to.
This means that parents need to do the hard work of maturing as wise people so that they will have commands and teaching that are worth bind on hearts and tying around necks.
