A Prayer

Father,

In this world, filled with such rapid change and instability, it’s so good to know that some things are fixed. They remain the same. The Savior You sent is full of grace for sinners like us, and He never changes.

Father, we are grateful that Jesus’ grace for us is inexhaustible. How good! If there were a limit, some point where His grace ends, that would be fatal for us. We have such a small understanding of how much we need His grace. We think we know. But the fact of the matter is that we really don’t. But Jesus’ grace never ends, always there to meet our every need.

We are grateful, Father, that Jesus is not shocked by what we do. We do some pretty horrible things. And we know it. We do things that we dare not tell anyone because we are sure that they would reject us if they knew. But not Jesus. He sees the ugly things we think and do and feel. And yet, He is still ready to grant us His grace of forgiveness. There is no sin that we could commit that would be more than what He could forgive.

We are grateful that Jesus’ grace is so very powerful. We all have sins that are deeply entrenched, sins that we cherish and cling to, sins that we are sure will never be removed from us. But Jesus’ grace can deal even with those. His grace has power to change the worst in us. And that is so comforting and encouraging.

We thank You, Father for the gift of Your Son, our Lord Jesus. We thank You for His amazing grace.

But Father, Jesus’ grace is so good that, all too often, we think that it is too good to be true. In fact, all too often, we don’t believe that it can be that good.

Every time we think our situation is hopeless, that’s unbelief. Every time we think that some sin is beyond forgiveness, that’s unbelief. Every time we think that, this time, Jesus will reject us for what we’ve done, that’s unbelief.

Forgive us, Father, for this unbelief. Change us by Your Spirit. Help us to believe this part of the Gospel. We ask this so that we might live in such a way that Your Gospel will shine through our lives to people all around us, people who really need to get to know You. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
Hebrews 13.8
