God's Love: He Loves His People

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.  Psalm 136.1

God loves His people, those who have entrusted themselves to Jesus. The love that God has for His people is different from the love that He has for the world. The Bible uses a particular word to highlight this different love. It's the word translated 'steadfast love' in the verse above. Biblical Hebrew has a word for love. But this 'steadfast love' is not that. It's a different word. This 'steadfast love' involves an important element not included in the other word for love: covenant. God has a covenant with His people. Jesus talks about this covenant when He says, 'This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.' In this covenant, God has made certain promises. And one of them is that He will love His people with this steadfast love.

Now, this might be very interesting to someone who's into languages. But it actually does have something to say to you. There is one way in which this steadfast love is different from the love that God has for the rest of the world. God's covenant love for His people will never end. The Psalm above tells us that 'His steadfast love endures forever'. In contrast, the love that God has for the world will come to an end. When Jesus returns, those who have not entrusted themselves to Him as Savior and are not obeying Him as Lord, '… will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord …' And away from the presence of the Lord includes away from His love. God's love for the people of the world will come to an end. But that will never happen to those who are faithful disciples, those in covenant with God. For these, 'His steadfast love endures forever'.
