God is interested in beauty. There are plenty of places in the Scriptures that show this. Here are a few.
First, a description of God's dwelling in heaven:
First, a description of God's dwelling in heaven:
Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and beautiful habitation.
Then, notice how David describes his God.
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.
This same concern for beauty shows up when it comes to worship. Here, God tells Moses about the clothing that the High Priest is to wear when he leads the people in worship.
And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.
God is interested in beauty.
Our church is part of the Reformed tradition. One aspect of this tradition is being very concerned for accuracy and precision in the things of God, something that especially shows itself in the use of words. This concern is a large part of how Reformed people understand being faithful to Jesus. Being concerned about such things is a great strength, especially in these days. However, we also need to have a concern for beauty. After all, God is. How that beauty shows in the life of a church, while being faithful in age that is sliding away from that, is not an easy matter to discern. But it really does need to be accuracy, precision and beauty.
