Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord! Psalm 119.1
Sadly, too many of us look at this verse and the first thing we notice is that word 'blameless'. Seeing that, we quickly conclude, 'Well, this doesn't apply to me. I'm certainly not blameless.' But that's misunderstanding how the Bible uses the word. The word isn't about being perfect. Rather, it's about living with integrity. And that simply means that the inside and the outside match. On the inside, we have decided to work at living according to what God has told us. The outside, our behavior, matches that decision. But please note that the decision is not to be perfect, but to work at living according to God. So, when someone with integrity, someone who is walking blamelessly, is not living according to God's Law, and that is pointed out, his response is clear. He wants to deal with it, and he does by repentance and faith.
This is why God could say of Zechariah and Elizabeth,
This is why God could say of Zechariah and Elizabeth,
And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.
Were they perfect? No. But they were walking blamelessly. They were people of integrity, working at living according to all the commandments and statues.
That clears the way to see the promise of this verse. People like Zechariah and Elizabeth, people who work at living according to what God has told them, people like you will be blessed. God will act to do you good. And that action will, among other things, result in your being able to do a better job at walking according to God's Law. And that, in turn, will result in God doing even more good to you. And on and on it goes.
