Musings on a Psalm

Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name. Psalm 33.20-21

Waiting. We are just no good at that. And yet, we can learn how to. We have to learn how to because we need to. We need to wait. The problems that confront us - the different ways that our lives just don't work - these are issues that we cannot fix. Only Jesus can fix them. And He will. But we need to wait as He moves us through the process of getting our lives fixed. And the psalmist explains how we are able to do that. We 'wait for the Lord ... for our heart is glad in Him, because we trust in His holy name.' See the connection? First, we know some things about who He is. That's what His name is about, who He is. As we get to know Him we are able to trust Him. (It's harder to trust a stranger.) One result of this trust is being glad in Him - being happy because of who He is. And that sense of happiness in Him, happiness because we know that He is going to fix everything so that our lives work perfectly - that sense of happiness makes it possible for us to patiently wait as He goes about doing His work of fixing our lives.
