Hell

I recently attended a forum on hell. There was a well-produced movie presenting the various views of our day followed by a collection of pastors and college instructors took the stage to answer some questions. One of the repeated refrains had to do with the fact that God loves. We were reminded that God is love, which is so very true. The implication from that was that since He loves, there can't be an eternal hell. There just can't be. So, the issue behind the issue is the question about God. Can a God of love condemn people to eternal punishment? What is usually forgotten is that the God of love also gets angry, sometimes very angry. The question, 'Can a God of anger consign people to eternal punishment?' is much easier to answer. But how do these two - God's love and God's anger - go together? In a way, I don't need to know the answer to that question. What I do need to know is what God has said. Did He say that there is a hell and that He will place people there as a just punishment for their rebellion against Him? If that is what God said, then all I need to do is believe Him. If I can understand how His love and anger fit together, all the better. But understanding that is not necessary for me to believe Him.
