Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. Psalms 33:3
Let’s consider this 'new song'. Singing a new song is not something unique to this Psalm. It shows up elsewhere in the Psalms and a few other places in Scripture. When you read this command for something new you might wonder what was wrong with the old. There nothing wrong with the old songs. Those older songs are the Church’s response to the works of God that we've experienced in our past. So, it's good to sing about how God rescued His Church from, for example, those Egyptians. But He's done more since. Lots more. And as He does something new for His people, we are to respond by singing something new. So, along with singing about His rescue at the Red Sea we are also to sing about His other rescues, including (and especially) His rescue at the Cross. But it doesn't stop even there. Our God is still performing mighty acts for the good of His people - as a group and as individuals. So, by this verse in Psalm 33 God is calling for a new response, something that includes our emotions, something like singing, whenever He does something new for our good.
