And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God… (John 17)
The most important question that a person can wrestle with is, 'Who is God?' Without a good and true answer to this question a person cannot know himself.
We are created beings. And ‘created beings’ means that we live, really live, only as we live in relation to the one who created us. He did not create us so that we would live on our own. He created us to know him, to enjoy him, to pursue our existence in concert with him. That is 'life' in is fullest sense. We have rebelled against that, and that's why life doesn't work. But Jesus has come. His goal is to restore us to our true status as creatures in relation to our Creator. Eternal life.
Thus, the importance of our question, 'Who is God?'
This is not a 'theological' or 'religious' question, in the narrow senses that those words are usually used. It’s an existential question. It’s about living. So, it cannot be answered with mere words. The answer is something to be experienced, something to be lived. However, words can help us. They are our tools. They are, in fact, necessary tools. So, the first step is to have some idea of what words actually describe our Creator. Then, one takes those words – those descriptions – and works to get to know this God, this creator, this person. What makes this even vaguely possible is that the God who has created us desires us to know him. He wants us to enjoy him person-to-person. So, he won't just be sitting and watching. He will be reaching out to us as we reach out to him.
The Bible is filled with the words that we need. And the Spirit is busy reaching out.
