The Bible has both of the above thoughts. So, unless you want to say that, in some way or other, the Bible contradicts itself (that is, God contradicts himself), they must, somehow, go together. It's no good grabbing one and ignoring the other.
It seems to me that, even before we attempt to understand them together, this much is clear. To love or to hate biblically[!] is to do something that is nuanced and complex. And that makes loving well and hating well much more difficult than we usually think.
