Humility

In the adult class on Sunday we were looking at the Parable of the Wedding Feast [Luke 14]. The climax is Jesus' statement, 'For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.' In that context I referred to a poem by Christina Rossetti, an English poet of the second half of the 19th century. On Sunday I gave a summary of the poem. Now I'll quote it.

Give me the lowest place: not that I dare
Ask for that lowest place, but Thou hast died
That I might live and share
Thy glory by Thy side.

Give me the lowest place: or if for me
That lowest place too high, make one more low
Where I may sit and see
My God and love Thee so.
