Everything starts with God. A person’s Christian walk is defined by his understanding of who God is, not just in general, but to him. ‘Who is God?’, is probably the most important question that we have to answer. Without a good answer to this question, that other question, ‘Who is Jesus?’ is either perceived as unimportant – and then ignored – or answered very superficially. One of my goals for this sermon was to emphasize the warmth of our God. It is easy for us in the Reformed tradition to think of God in ways that seem to be majestic but, for one reason or other, are actually just distant. And, practically speaking, distant translates into cold. But that isn’t who YHWH is. He is warm and inviting and hospitable. He still has expectations of His guests. There is the need for the altar of burnt offering and the mercy seat. But these are seen in the context of God’s invitation to a great conversation.
